Disposable vs refillable starts with cost per puff
The headline price of a disposable tells you almost nothing. What matters is the price divided by how long it lasts, and on that measure the range across our own shelves is enormous.
Read that again, because it is the most useful thing on this page. A device under 3,000 puffs works out at roughly AED 25 per 1,000 puffs. A device over 30,000 puffs works out at roughly AED 1.23. That is a twenty-fold difference in running cost, and both sit on the same shelf at broadly similar headline prices — the small ones median AED 35, the large ones median AED 49.
The reason is straightforward: you are largely paying for the battery, the casing, the coil and the packaging. Those cost roughly the same whether the device holds 2ml or 20ml. Stretch that fixed cost over twenty times more puffs and the per-puff figure collapses.
What this means in practice
If you are buying disposables and want to spend less without changing anything else about how you vape, buy fewer, larger devices rather than more, smaller ones. That is the entire trick, and it costs you nothing to apply.
What a refillable actually costs
Now the other side. A refillable pod system has one upfront cost and two recurring ones.
The device. Median price across the 237 pod systems we stock is AED 120, ranging from AED 30 for a basic pen up to AED 300 for a premium pod mod. Pay once, keep it a year or more.
E-liquid. Median prices from our e-juice range: a 30ml bottle is AED 40, 60ml is AED 45, and 120ml is AED 60. Note how quickly the per-millilitre cost falls with size — AED 1.33/ml at 30ml against AED 0.50/ml at 120ml. The same fixed-cost logic as disposables.
Coils or pods. Median AED 40 for a replacement pod and AED 50 across pods and coils. Most people replace one every one to three weeks, which we cover in why a vape tastes burnt.
A realistic month on a refillable
For a moderate user getting through roughly 2ml a day:
- E-liquid: about 60ml a month. Buy it as one 60ml bottle at AED 45, or as two 30ml salt bottles at AED 80
- Coils or pods: two a month at AED 40–50 each, so AED 80–100
- Monthly running total: roughly AED 125–180
- Plus AED 120 once, for the device
The honest verdict
Here is where we say the thing a vape shop is not supposed to say.
At current UAE prices, large disposables are often cheaper to run than a refillable pod system. A 30,000-puff device at AED 49 delivers, on the lab figure, more puffs than most people take in a month. Even allowing for real-world use coming in well under the rated count, a heavy user replacing one every two to three weeks spends roughly AED 65–100 a month with no upfront cost and no maintenance.
The refillable route at AED 125–180 a month plus AED 120 upfront does not beat that on money alone. The economics that make refillables obviously cheaper in the UK or US do not hold here, because high-capacity disposables are considerably cheaper in this market.
So why buy a refillable at all?
Because cost is not the only axis, and three of the others matter:
- Flavour choice. A refillable opens the entire e-juice catalogue and lets you pick your exact nicotine strength rather than accepting whatever the disposable was filled with. See nic salt vs freebase.
- Waste. A disposable puts a lithium battery in a bin every couple of weeks. A refillable device lasts a year or more on the same battery. If that matters to you, it is a strong argument and it does not depend on the maths.
- Control. Adjustable airflow, adjustable power, and the ability to step your nicotine down over time — which is the point if you are using vaping to move away from cigarettes, as the NHS guidance on e-cigarettes sets out.
If you buy heavily discounted e-liquid in 120ml bottles and stretch coils properly, a refillable does become clearly cheaper. But that is an engaged user optimising, not the default experience.
Where these numbers break down
Three honest caveats, because a cost comparison built on shaky inputs is worse than none.
Puff counts are lab figures. They come from short, consistent machine draws. Real use with longer inhales lands well below the rated number — often by a third or more. Treat the figure as a way to compare two devices against each other, never as a promise. Every per-puff number on this page inherits that uncertainty.
Coil life varies enormously. We used two coils a month. Sweet, dark and dessert liquids can halve that; clean menthol and fruit blends can double it. Your own figure could reasonably be anywhere from AED 40 to AED 150 a month.

On the lab figure, well over a month for most users. In practice expect meaningfully less, since real draws are longer than machine draws.
Do I need to charge a disposable?
High-capacity ones, yes. The USB-C port exists so the battery survives long enough to use all the liquid. Charging does not refill the device.
