How to choose your first vape comes down to three decisions, in this order: disposable or refillable, what nicotine strength, and what draw style. Get those right and almost any device in the shop will work for you. Get them wrong and you will conclude that vaping does not work — when in fact the equipment was simply mismatched.
This guide is written for adults switching from cigarettes. It takes about five minutes.

Step 1: Disposable or refillable?
This is the fork in the road, and there is no universally right answer.
Start with a disposable if
You want zero learning curve, you are not certain you will stick with vaping, or you want to try several flavours cheaply before committing. A disposable vape arrives filled and charged. You inhale, it works, and when it is finished you replace it. There is nothing to prime, set or maintain.
The catch is running cost. As we found when we priced our own catalogue, small disposables cost around AED 25 per 1,000 puffs against AED 1.23 for the largest. If you go the disposable route, buy large ones.
Start with a refillable if
You already know you are switching for good, you want control over flavour and strength, or the waste of a battery every fortnight bothers you. A pod system costs more upfront — median AED 120 on this site — but opens the whole e-liquid range.
Modern pod systems are far simpler than the box mods that gave vaping its complicated reputation. Most have no screen and no settings: fill the pod, click it in, inhale.
Step 2: Nicotine strength
This is the decision people get wrong most often, and it is the single biggest reason a switch fails.
Too little nicotine and you will vape constantly, still crave a cigarette, and drift back to smoking within a fortnight. Too much and you will feel dizzy and slightly sick. Neither outcome is the device’s fault.
As a starting point, based on what you smoked:
- Up to 10 cigarettes a day: 20mg nicotine salt
- 10 to 20 a day: 20mg to 50mg nicotine salt
- A pack a day or more: 50mg nicotine salt
Almost every disposable is already filled with salt nicotine at one of these strengths, so if you are starting there, just check the number on the box. If you are buying a refillable, this is where the nic salt vs freebase distinction matters — a small pod device needs salt, and putting low-strength freebase in it will leave you unsatisfied.
Adjust based on your own behaviour after a few days rather than on theory. Constant vaping and lingering cravings means go up. Lightheadedness means come down.
Step 3: Draw style
There are two ways to inhale, and matching this to how you smoked matters more than most beginners expect.
Mouth-to-lung (MTL) means drawing vapour into your mouth first, then inhaling it. It is exactly how you smoked a cigarette, the draw feels tight and restricted, and it produces modest vapour. This is what you want as a beginner.
Direct-to-lung (DTL) means drawing straight into the lungs in one motion, like sucking air through a wide straw. It produces large clouds and needs low-strength freebase liquid. It is a legitimate style, but it feels nothing like smoking and it is the wrong place to start.
Most disposables and pod systems are MTL by default. If a device is described as sub-ohm, high-wattage or cloud-focused, it is DTL — skip it for now.
What to actually buy
The cheapest sensible start
One large disposable, around AED 45–50, in a fruit or menthol flavour at the strength matched to your smoking. No commitment, nothing to learn. If you like it after a fortnight, move on to a refillable.
The best value start
An MTL pod system around AED 100–140, plus one 30ml bottle of salt nicotine at AED 40, plus a spare pod. Roughly AED 190 all in. Devices such as the Uwell Caliburn, Vaporesso XROS and OXVA Xlim exist precisely for this job — they are simple, they draw like a cigarette, and spares are easy to find. Browse them by maker on our brand pages.
What not to buy first
A high-wattage box mod with a sub-ohm tank. It is more expensive, needs low-strength freebase that will not satisfy a smoker, produces enormous clouds, and requires you to understand coil resistance and wattage before it works properly. Come to it later if you want to, not first.
Five mistakes to avoid
- Nicotine strength too low. The most common failure by a distance. If you are still craving cigarettes, go up rather than giving up.
- Buying a cloud device to quit smoking. Wrong draw, wrong nicotine, wrong starting point.
- Not priming a new coil. On a refillable, let a filled pod stand ten minutes before the first draw or you will ruin it immediately. See why a vape tastes burnt.
- Chain vaping. A vape is not a cigarette with a fixed end point. Take a few puffs, put it down.
- Committing to one flavour. Buy two. Tobacco flavours in particular divide people sharply — try one alongside a fruit rather than betting everything on it.
Frequently asked questions
How to choose your first vape if you have never smoked?
Vaping products are intended for adult smokers switching away from cigarettes. If you do not smoke, the honest answer is not to start — the NHS guidance frames e-cigarettes specifically as a tool for people who already smoke.
What nicotine strength should a beginner use?
Match it to your smoking: 20mg salt for up to 10 a day, 50mg for a pack a day. Adjust after a few days based on whether you still crave cigarettes.
Is a disposable or a pod system better to start with?
A disposable if you want zero learning curve or are still deciding. A pod system if you are committed, want flavour choice, and would rather not bin a battery every fortnight.
How much should a first vape cost in the UAE?
Around AED 45–50 for a large disposable, or roughly AED 190 for a pod system with liquid and a spare pod.
Why does my vape not feel like a cigarette?
Usually a DTL device where you need MTL, or nicotine strength set too low. Both are fixable without replacing the device in most cases.
The short version
Pick disposable or refillable, match nicotine to how much you smoked, and choose a tight MTL draw. Those three decisions carry almost all the weight. Everything else — flavour, brand, colour — is preference.
